Star Lesson has clearly done its homework with Lesson Gems - it's exactly what every Teaching School Alliance needs to enable coherent collaboration between schools. Stuart Anderson
Star Lesson always keeps the process of filming, reviewing and sharing lessons as simple as possible. The users’ login page contains two buttons. The ‘Teacher Log In’ button enables teaches to go to their private homage where they can watch, tag, edit, share and learn from their lessons.
The ‘Observe Lesson’ button enables lessons to be observed live from any location around the school. Lessons can only be observed live with the permission of the observee.
Teachers are as equally interested in their own teaching as they are in their pupils’ reactions to their teaching. Star Lesson thus enables teachers to watch video footage of themselves teaching shown side by side to footage of their pupils reacting to their teaching – we call this DualView. Only when teachers watch their lessons in DualView can they truly formulate plans on how to improve their teaching.
This is the password protected navigation page where teachers can watch, tag and share the lessons that they have filmed. Within this homepage teachers can also search for specific tags, see what their key strengths and key areas for development are, as well as a host of other features.
If a teacher has requested for their lesson to be remotely observed then that lesson will not only appear in their list of lessons but also within the ‘Lessons I Observed’ area of the Observer’s homepage.
A whole lesson becomes even more useful as a CPD tool once it has been broken down into a series of tagged clips. Star Lesson’s software lets users tag sections of the lesson in accordance with 2012 Ofsted and 2012 Standards. Users are also able to tag freehand and with voice tags. Schools that have a unique observation format or innovative teaching practices are even able to create their own tags.
Without requiring the use of complicated video editing software, Star Lesson lets users easily pull out specific clips from their lesson, facilitating the process of creating tagged clip banks of best practice. Star Lesson software even enables teachers to stitch a series of clips together to create lesson highlight videos.
When teachers film their own lessons by swiping their dibba and they tag themselves, Star Lesson will automatically calculate their key strengths and key areas for development based on how they have tagged themselves. This data is completely private to each individual teacher and, over time as the data is gathered, offers a powerful resource for working out the areas of their teaching that they need to work on.
